How to Wash Your Clothes So They Actually Last

How to Wash Your Clothes So They Actually Last

The washing machine is the single biggest threat to most clothing. Heat, agitation, and harsh detergents break down fibres, distort shapes, and fade colours. The good news: most of the damage is preventable with a few small changes.

The rules that matter most

  1. Wash at 30°C or below for everything except bedding and towels
  2. Turn dark colours and printed items inside out before washing
  3. Use a mesh laundry bag for delicates, knitwear, and underwear
  4. Never overfill the drum — clothes need space to rinse properly
  5. Air dry where possible; tumble drying shrinks and weakens fibres
  6. Avoid fabric softener on technical fabrics, merino wool, and down

What the care label symbols actually mean

The single most useful symbol is the wash tub with a temperature — follow it. A crossed-out wash tub means dry clean only. A crossed-out triangle means no bleach. When in doubt, hand wash in cool water and lay flat to dry — it is the safest option for almost any fabric.
